Since you are considering going the route of replacing the axles, you might as well replace the two inner driver's as well. You don't exactly say if your son is doing all the work, but if that's the case, take note that the set of shims which are removed along with each of the replaced inner drivers must remain with the new inner drivers. Keep them left to right specific. No swapping side to side, no addition or subtraction. You can clean them with steel wool and solvent if they're dirty, but that's about it. Although metal, some shims are quite thin and can bend in two and break, so be careful with handling. Also, changing one inner driver at a time is the secret so as not to have to remove the back differential cover because the heavy crown gear has dropped to the bottom of the case.
In general, the axles are fairly rugged and shouldn't need replaced unless a problem with the CV joint is evident. A cost saving method would be to clean the bearing assemblies up and check for wear issues, especially the tripod bearings. If the inner drivers reveal a deep groove where the bearings make contact, that would indicate both should be replaced. So you might be able to get away with just replacing the inner drivers and the tripod bearings. Once the tripod bearing is removed, you can then easily replace the CV joint rubber boot, plus the inner driver boot. If there's little wear on the inner driver surfaces, (common with non turbo cars) then you might not need to replace anything. Just clean out the old grease and replace the old boots with new.
