This somewhat like chemistry class. You know the desired outcome, just measurements do you need to record to get there???
If you are going to replace the boots, and if they are/were torn and the CV joints got dry or dirty, it's about a push to just go ahead and purchase entire rebuilt units. These include the inner tripod joint, the outer CV joint, inner and outer boots, and they are already built. you just remove and replace. If you don't want to learn how to unlock the CV joint to remove the boots, learn how to disassymble the CV joint to clean and check for wear, maybe have to purchase parts (the CV joint kit alone is about the same price as the entire replacement), put them *back* together, (lots of grease and papertowels...) and only do this for one car? Consider the replacment unit. only hassle is sending back the core unit for refund.
If you are going to keep the car for awhile, and it's a 1986 with how many miles? Things I'd do while in there:
(realize that after you get to the point of doing some items, spend the extra couple of dollars and do them all)
Doing the CV boots means you have the CV joint off, the lower ball joint off, the wheel off, and can see the brakes. So, look at the rotors and pads.
Ball joints are only about $12 each, consider doing the upper and lower.
If you do that, consider doing the wheel bearing if it's dry or gravel feel when rotated. When you do the upper and lower ball joints it's just get the old bearing pressed out and the new one it. If you have a buddy at a SAAB shop you should be able to get him to press old out and new in for about $30-40 cash. (this is off the clock time, lunch time or at the end of the day).
You can't do the upper A arm bushings with the engine in (unless you cheat, don't think you are ready for this) but you can do the lowers. But doubt you need them.
So, if you do the upper and lower ball joints, wheel bearings, axles with boots and CV joints, you should be good for another 100k miles. Rotors and pads if needed, if you do these suggest you get the rebuild kit with clips-springs-cotter keys- all good stuff.
email or do a reply if you want pictures.
I just did this for the forth time... all on 1987's which are the same as your 1986. One for my son. The others are wife's cars and last on is my brothers. Part of the work is a PITA to do the first two times, get better with practice. Other parts are pretty straight forward. The question to ask is how many times are you going to do them? But it is fun and beats TV on a Friday night! :)
