turbocharger shaft play?

I'm smoking a lot while idling. It's been going on for a couple of years. Of course, I suspect that my turbocharger seal is leaking. I have a spare turbocharger that I got from a car with only 80K miles. Before I install this turbocharger, I want to try to verify that it's in better shape than the one in my car.
I've heard that the shaft play is a way to get an idea of the wear of the seal. Can anybody describe how to test this? How much play is acceptable? The turbo I plan to install seems to have no play in the shaft when I try to wiggle the intake side with my finger.
