trouble putting in a new gas shock so I'll add this:
The new shocks are often taped or tied collapsed and the harness that comes with it can be used to hold the old one collapsed if you get the harness on while the shock is collapsed. The new shock can be collapsed and the harness put back on it before installed...in fact it should be unless you have really strong hands and can collapse it while installing it.
There are shock removal tools that also break the shock...you simply unscrew the nut øn the top of the shaft, screw on the tool, screw the lever arm into the tool and lever/break the shaft. KD makes one for about $10, see your NAPA store.
