no charge, battery going dead

My daughter took our '90 T out for a drive the other night and got stranded when the battery went dead. She was driving down the road when she noticed the radio went dead, then some of the dash warning lights went on, then finally the car just died. Thinking it had to be the alternator, I changed out the VR and I still have the same problem. I took the alternator out completely and had it bench tested. It came back fine...14+ volts with a load on it, amp output good. Yet when it's in the car (after the battery is charged) and the car is running, when I put a meter on the battery I can watch the voltage decreasing.
I installed an extra ground wire from the alternator with no change. When you turn the key to the on position the battery light is on, when the car starts the lights goes out.
The day before this started I had the dash apart to repair the odometer and replace the heater valve. Since then the tach does not work, the instrument lights do not work, and the left turn signal light glows merrily regardless if the turn signals are on or not. While this may be related to my situation, I am at a loss as to why.
I appreciate any assistance in what I should be looking for. Thanks!
