I smell an 8 valve! Best car we ever owned, an '85 4-door. We never did get past the funky start-up issue, but there are ways to make it better yourself.
1. Grab some penetrating oil, and spray it into the idle bypass valve
2. Clean gunk and varnish out of the throttle body and off of the mixture control plate using the suitable solvent of your choice(be gentle around the metering venturi plate, and still get it all)
3. Use some good fuel injector cleaner.
There are many more suggestions depending on what exactly your car is doing, but do these three and you'll be on your way.
I'm off to recusitate my 8 valve tomorrow morning..... Winter's not far away..... good luck!
