Most other cars use vacuum for brake boost. Saab had a better idea, and used the ABS pump/accumulator for both ABS and Brake Boost.
On the new generation 900 (94 and later) and about the same time on the 9000, Saab went to a more conventional system, with a vacuum brake boost, and an ABS pump just for ABS. This system was better for a few reasons - it was simpler, and if the ABS pump failed, you lost only ABS. You still had brake boost. With the all-in-one system, if the ABS pump fails, you lose brake boost, which isn't much fun. It is a rare fault, but it does mean that you should flush the brake fluid every 2-3 years. That's true of any car with any brake system, but it's very important for the Saab because a few flushes every couple of years is MUCH cheaper than the replacement parts.
