Anders,

Thanks. I did go over the car I am buying tomorrow with a friend who worked for volvo in the 80s and early 90s. We drove it hard to check gears and brakes and we went over the things like body, frame, lights, power interior stuff, exhaust, engine oil and so on. Today I went over the service records as well as the 60K check last year at Santa Monica Dealership. For years before that it was at Culver City. Culver did things like replace the hatch latch when it got stuck one time. And did a complete clutch job at 50K. The wife was dusting it a bit to much, perhaps in her fender bender experience.
The owners had it on a 3K oil change track from new. The wife did get into a fender bender years ago that popped paint off the hood. I have not seen a report on that because they did not claim it. New Pirellis and lifetime whatever coverage from somewhere were just put on. Brakepads are from midas and I cant wait to see what the rotors look like. I think 9000 brakes would be better anyway. One of the ABS sensors is funky. light stays on all the time for the last month. They just had it in to SM SAAB and they told them it would be 400$ to replace. The ABS seems to be have turned itself off as a result. Is this normal? Should I have it checked? Should I take it in based on this info? ABS box can be rebuilt right? I assume its from the wrong brake pads on the stock rotors. Everything else works from the loud power antenna to the heated drivers seat. Car even has bosch fog torches that have never had the covers off. still mounted half behind the plate frame. The hood was repainted and one light has been sitting in its bracket jiggling around for some time. The dealer wanted to charge upwards to 400 for that too. I was told the hood repaint and the loose lamp are from the wife's fender bender.
There is a little black oil on the under guard plate below the engine, I think its normal looking and that the engine has never been steamed. Looks really good on the outside too me. I just glanced up at the underside to see if there was any obvious rust flaking. None. There is a one inch flake of paint on the sunroof edge. the drains probably need clearing. The liner is sagging and I will replace with darker I think. All this is cosmetic and really doesnt play into the price. SInce the tires are $60 each and brand spanking new for me to abuse a little until I get something better that is a plus and the newer clutch(probably a dealer part swap job)cost a lot I consider that a plus too since I will no doubt turn it to dust.
The ABS sensor is the only real thing. And the possibility of the tem gauge being bad or something. Since the lights arent on flagging anything and it was dealer serviced I think this is ok to take as is. And since I plan on smoothing the head and some other little mods including new mounts and such I dont see it as a problem. It moved great. What else should I look for? Thanks for your time. It runs well and really clean. Water pump sounded fine at startup. Tell me if I am doing good. Hope to visit your shop soon.
Cheers,
Jason, in Pacific palisades about to buy a 64k hatch in Scarabe Green with Luxury package for $2500 from original owners
