I had a noisy fuel pump on one of my '85s (not a Saab, but the same LH system) and I found that the fuel pressure regulator had sprung an internal leak. This pegged the fuel pressure, and the fuel pump was slightly audible in its protests. It got worse, especially as the temperature climbed.
Other problems you may have are a bad pickup hose in the tank (the pump will make noise below a certain fuel level), clogged pickup "sock" filter, engine management running too rich, or just an aged fuel pump.
Did I miss anything here? Sorry I can't pin it down any better.
