Sorry there is no way to utilize the existing EQ. It uses DIN connectors which have long been outdated and nothing uses them anymore. Mine still sits in its place as a decorative reminder of how cool these were in the age of cassette decks.
As for speakers there area so many options to choose from. I personally went with a nice mid/high range speaker in all four corners (matching the existing cutouts) and put a compact bass tube in the back. Before dissing the bass tube... remember to round out your sound in the car. Jazz is one of my favorits and with crisp mid and high range...the bass truly adds depth to any music. It was only another $120.
