My understanding is that the hood is designed to slide up over the windshield in a front edn accident to keep the passengers from flying through the front. The key is between the seats to keep from impaling your knee on a dash-mounted key. Saab pays VERY close attention to safety features, and if it isn't the safest car in the world, it is the second safest. (seems like they have a safety ontest every year with Volvo). I find it odd that Sweden makes the safest cars in the world, while having the highest suicide rate.
