Help with 1989 Saab 900S

I have a 1989 Saab 900S which sometimes will die when I come to a stop. If I shift it into neutral, while keeping my foot on the brake and accelerator, I can get it to go without stalling again. This does not happen all the time. Usually when the engine light comes on it will do this. Any suggestions on what it could be?
Thanks for helping.
