I got the mirror off - the idea about leaving the screws on and tapping them worked neatly (mine are phillips, not torx). Then finally just pried off the broken parts of the mirror to see the guts. The mirror attaches to the pivot gizmo with a type of ring/slip joint and what you are doing with the tabs through that little hole is "trying" to move the back (turning) ring of the slip joint. Took me 15 minutes to get the hang of it even with the mirror removed - the took me another 15 to figure out how to get it back on- here's how
Align the four "nubs" on the stationary ring with the holes on the white ring that pivots with the motor. Then with the mirror tipped all the way "down" pry the tabs through the hole CLOCKWISE. This locks the nubs in the holes on the pivot ring.
I think I might have squirted some WD-40 in around the mirror, trying to get some on that slip ring - it might have helped.
Thanks for your help. Now I have to find a replacement mirror!
