There is a CEL on an '86 8 valve.
It never lights up. If it does, your car is wired poorly. The Check Engine light only functions on 16 valve cars with electronic FI.
Vacuum leaks, clean the throttle bore, hit the idle valve with penetrant.
Stage 2: Be sure your oil filler cap is properly-seated and sealing. Push and twist until the tabs engage, then stop pushing down on it. Stop twisting when the cap springs up and into its seated position. It's a huge vacuum leak if you don't.
Also, check the o-ringish seal around the gas cap. Yes, I really said the gas cap.
