My '92 is from Arkansas originally (NY now, pretty rare!) and the side trim is "rough" as you describe, but I'm pretty sure somebody re-dyed it because it is dark black. It also rubs off on a chamois/towel so be careful there. Many "trim-blackening" agents are commonly available. I'd suggest trying one in an inconspicuous place first, like on the underside of the door trim under the mirror.
BE sure to mask the body's painted surfaces first. I don't care what the label says.
