If you have a place where you can safely jack it up with jackstands and have some sort of upper A-arm spacer, you might want to look at the inner drivers. The first thing that the shaking on acceleration like you described makes me think of is that one of the tripod joints died in a big way. If the on on the passenger side is really bad, you might be able to put the parking brake on, put it in neutral and be able to move it around by hand from above.
You can check to see if the front mount died by opening the hood, starting the car and, with your foot on the brake, put it in 1st and slip the clutch to see if the front of the engine rises more than 1/2-inch or so. If it does, the front mount is bad. When it's bad, it can have a resonance that amplifies wheel-frequency vibrations at certain speeds. If you have a Turbo, you could jam a pice of rubber above the mount to absorb some of the movement.
Here are a couple of long shots:
- It is possible that the outer CV is so sloppy that it's causing the vibration, but there would be other problems before you got to the point you describe.
- Check to see of you have a front shock that pulled through the upper washer or has leaked out all of its fluid.
