the more i read about it, the more i'm thinking inner driver (why are these cars so damn complicated?). didn't jack it up again, but there seems to be some play at what i assume is the tripod bearing. i'm having a bit of a tough time conceptualizing this, but what i'm gathering is that the tripod bearing/inner driver combo serves the same purpose as the inner cv of a "normal" car, which would just bolt directly to the tranny. on mine, turning what i think is the inner driver, there is 2-3mm slop before the axle engages. presumably, the tripod seats in some bearing surface of the inner driver, and 1 or both are worn. now, to see if i have basic assembly/installation right:
-removing the axle will remove outer cv, axle, and tripod bearing, leaving inner driver attached to tranny
-inner driver doesn't seem to be attached with bolts, although it seems the housing needs to be removed to replace; i guess there's circlips or something on the back side of the housing that necessitate removal of housing. but housing is removed via 6 bolts; housing/driver come out as unit. housing is reused with shims or whatever behind it. there's a bearing in the housing too, which i guess is replaced.
seems like a very manageable job, depending on how hard it is to physically remove driver/housing from tranny. i'd love to be able to make it home before replacing, so that i'll have all my tools/time, and i had been planning on replacing springs/shocks/ball joints/tie rods anyway. my biggest concern is that one of the bearings failed catastrophically, leading to sudden increase in symptoms. otherwise i think i should be able to make it. i may just take boot off, and repack with grease. thanks for the help, and any other suggestions...
