Since you have a bit of juice left in the battery, first check that the alternator frame is grounded. Take a jumper cable or any piece of wire and touch it to the alternator frame and the block. Then, have a helper turn the key to on(not start). I'll bet the alternator light now comes on.
If so, the thick short black ground wire from the alternator frame to the block is probably broken or has a bad connection. This is very common. You can either replace the wire and/or fix the connection, or install an additional ground wire from the alternator frame to any good engine ground connection or directly to the negative battery terminal.
A battery recharge should bring the car back to life.
As another poster suggested, the warning light seldom fails, and a previous owner could not have operated the car without the bulb in the circuit for more than an hour or so. That said, a loose bulb or a bad bulb could cause the problem. If the bulb does not go on when you test the circuit with the alternator frame to block jumper, then suspect the bulb or socket, which is gotten to via the left speaker hole.
