if you are accurate in your accessment (being in the "dark" and all) this is really not too difficult to fix. The lower A arm's had a run of issues. when the wife's went it looked like a bad weld. you should be able to source the parts used for about $100, or less. Then while you are at put new upper and lower ball joints in ($12 ea at eEuroparts) and the tie rod end ($15 ea IIRC). Go ahead and do both sides and you'll be set for another 100k miles or so. Get it aligned and you are good to go.
The only tools required are 17mm, 19mm 1/2 inch drive and wrench. the 32mm for the wheel nut, a couple of jack stands, a floor jack really helps compress the A Arm, and if you don't have the Bentely book $45 for it.
If you are really up to it go ahead and replace the pads, rotors if necessary, and you can purchase the kits with replacement brackets and clips and such. Basically it's Brand new after you are done.
send me an email if you have questions.
