Help! Rattling sound when accelerating...

I'm stumped. I have a 1994 convertible turbo automatic. When I accelerate under load, a strange rattling is heard from around 2500 rpm to 3000 rpm. The bigger the load (ie uphill) the louder the rattle. It sounds a bit like very small pebbles rattling around in a can. Here's what I've troubleshot based on what I've read on the board:
It's not the header pipe rattling in its mount against the tranny. It's not any of the heat shields rattling around. It's not the catalytic converter (though it sounds like one) because I've just replaced the cat and the noise continues. It doesn't seem to be coming from the exhaust at all. It sounds like it's coming from just in front of the firewall.
The real bugger is it only does it under load, on the road, so I can't troubleshoot it in the garage.
Help! Any thoughts out there? Is there any chance using regular gas instead of a higher octane is responsible?
Craig.
