I'd guess the brushes are just barely above minimum so they can charge the car for the time being but are not making enough contact anymore to fully utilize your alternator- or the voltage regulator (in the brush assembly) is fried.
Always check your belt tension and grounds on the alternator- there should be one heavy ground and one light wire, one goes to the block and the other goes to the over-strut assembly wall.
Also a good time to check the other half of your block ground, which is the negative battery cable lead that attaches to the transmission case.
