My fiance has an '89 900 Turbo 16v. Last Friday the car began stumbling on her while on the freeway and died after she took the nearest offramp. After having it towed back to her house, I determined that (1) the battery was not only dead but had bad cells, and (2) it had a bad ground from the alternator to the engine block (which was the main cause of (1)). I then ordered a new battery for it and replaced the bad alt. ground with a brand-new one that I made.
After doing this, I took a spare, fully-charged battery to verify that the alternator was charging. The battery being too big to fit into the cramped compartment, I hooked it up to the car with heavy jumper cables. I then started the car.
The car started, but its idle ranged between ~100 RPM to ~2000 RPM, very sporadic. It would rev, then slow and stumble, rev again, and so on until it finally died. The only good news was that the alternator was indeed charging properly. Frustrated and tired, I disconnected the battery and came back the next day.
The following day I had the same problem -- except that I nursed the engine along until it warmed up, after which it idled at ~900 RPM. After reading about the possible causes from this site, I decided to pull the error codes from the ECM. It gave me the normal 12231 (ignition off) and then a 12223 (lean mixture).
I then did a quick inspection of the vacuum system. The hoses I could see were intact and fit snugly. The canister had vacuum when I pulled the hose from it with the engine off (of course I promptly put it back on).
After that, I started following the AMM testing procedures that Ari posted on this board. I got as far as Step 3 and the AMM wire didn't glow after 20 seconds (the car being a 1989 model, I'm pretty sure it has the LH 2.4.). Following the directions, I disconnected the AMM (with the ignition OFF and the key OUT) and then tried to start the car. It would not start.
So now at this point I'm wondering if my disconnecting the AMM had anything to do with its reluctance to start. I hook it back up, yank the battery for a few minutes to reset the ECM, and try again. No luck since then.
Also, the 12223 code is out of the ECM, which makes sense given that it hasn't actually run since I reset it. It only repeats the 12231 code, so I don't think the ECM is at fault for this latest problem.
I'm going to try and start it again Monday evening after I get off work. I'll also see about throwing a few more gallons in the tank, I think it's around 1/4 tank right now.
Could I be barking up the wrong tree here? Does this look more like a fuel delivery problem than an electrical/computer sensor problem? I'm getting a little frustrated here, especially with the Haynes manuals (I just rush-ordered a Bentley manual from Amazon, hopefully it'll be more useful).
