Inner tie rod end replacement question...

Hi all!
I'm visiting my mother in Saskatchewan and the family car needs some attention. There is a bad vibration, mostly on acceleration, very slightly on deceleration. It's worst at ~55 mph, and when doing controlled swerves across two lanes, the vibration occurs unerringly in right turns only.
I was leaning towards an inner driver issue, but jacking up the car and shaking the front wheels revealed play in the left wheel only: about 1/4" at the tire's edge. This makes me believe that it's the inner tie rod end. [The outer is in good shape.] I've read some of the past posts, and it appears that the job is easy (with the proper tool) and can be done with the rack still in the car, is this correct? Also, are there any other issues that could cause a similar effect? Will I be hit with any drastic surprises, like damaging the whole rack?
Other factors are that I'm away from home and shop, minimal tools (I'd buy the special tool, of course), and that it's darn cold out here (-20 deg C). I'd rather not lie under the car and change the inner driver until I'm at least home where I have more tools.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer. I won't be able to reply to any posts until late tonight, ~8pm CST.
