Earlier I posted a message relating to a problem with my shift lever. Specifically, I was driving when the shift lever lost all direction or support. Feeling like a chicken's head with a broken neck, the shift lever would not go into any gear and it literally flopped around like the analogous chicken's head. The first impression of a majority responding, was that this 93 900 S had a deteriorated rubber grommet or bushing in the brace where the shift rods passes through. I ordered the replacement for it and when we got into the job, it became clear that the problem was the result of a structural flaw in the shifter. The shifter had broken at a weld. Previously, the shifter had been one solid unit. Then someone came up with a new system [91-93] where they had to weld together components to make the shift rod. Where did this engineering genius come from ? I have taught Physics at both the High School and College levels and someplace along the way I am sure that the issue of the strength of solid rods vs. a welded one was discussed. You can't break something and then put it together under normal circumstances and expect it to be stronger than the original unbroken piece [not even with Super Glue]. The explanation is beyond this note. What I am interested in here, is what years of the 900 have a solid shift rod, which would work with this 93 900 S and where might I get one. I checked eEuro and found this part under 5-spd Gear Shift Lever [91-93] [4279493]. However, in the earlier years of the 900, where
I believe they made this more durable shift rod, I could not find the corresponding part.
Any ideas on the necessary terms and/ the source ? Thanks W. B.
