when you let the car idle in 1st or 2nd and you can feel this "chain slop" where do you feel it and how does it feel? I've never experienced this. I've never found chains that were stretched to the point of slapping (I've rebuilt a couple of hundred of these) and I look for that kind of stuff. There is a hydraulic chain tensioner which if defective would slacken the chains. You will have to pull the front transmission cover to inspect this. I've only seen a few of those messed up and they were in really eaten up tranny's. The second gear downshift problem is a worn out 1/2 shift fork. (A bad balk ring will cause problems going both ways). You could drive the car by "power shifting" down to second but that eats up the gears terribly and I didn't tell you to do that). When you say "Idle in 1st or 2nd gear" is the clutch disengaged or are you rolling 'off throttle'? Pinion bearings are the thing that wear most often and commonly in these 5 speeds and necessitate rebuild. They will be noisy whenever the final drive (therefore the car) is rolling. When allowed to wear to extreme they cause shifting problems with 5th gear and sometimes reverse. At that point the damage to the gearbox is sometimes so bad that rebuilding is not cost effective unless you have a lot of good used gears around. Pinion bearings generally hold up for 80-150 thousand miles depending on the "nut that holds the steering wheel". Your noise when you release the clutch could be due to: 1)Bad bearing in the upper chainwheel, 2)worn down "snout" on which that bearing mounts. That happens when the bearing gets stiff or seizes., 3)Worn out input shaft bearings (also called lower chainwheel bearings), 4)rear cluster gear bearing has worn into the layshaft. Seen on most pre '89 five speeds when disassembled for pinion bearing replacement. Also 1987 5 speeds had a little 6000 series bearing supporting the front tip of the input shaft. I can't recall whether "s" cars had this feature but I think they did. Seize that baby up and you'll get some music. Of course all this just amounts to; "stuff is wearing out in your gearbox and you can drive it until it pops or pull it out now and fix it for $$$". Pulling the transmission front cover and poking in new chains is not likely to keep it going any longer. Depending upon your level of mechanical skill you may find that the best bet is to find a driving car which is to be parted and can prove it has a smooth quiet 5 speed then swap it in there. The swap labor is comparitively big so don't gamble on a used gearbox that isn't proven to be OK. Good luck.
