alternator troubleshooting Posted by Tom G [Email] (#1951) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Tom G) on Tue, 27 Dec 2005 06:01:06 In Reply to: Re: electrical problem/charging that I can't figure out, 2nd Saab, Mon, 26 Dec 2005 05:40:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I personally don't recommend disconnecting battery cable on cars with alternators. If others do this and it works ok, fine. I'm concerned with shorting the diodes. On cars with generators (old VWs), ok.
Instead, why not measure the voltage across the battery? With a properly working alternator, the voltage should read between 13.5 and 14.5. If you read battery voltage with the car running, your charging circuit is faulty. You will need to measure this voltage statically.
I've found that newer cars, with electronic ignition and an electric fuel pump can deplete a battery in a few hours.
Another "indicator" is too start the car with the lights on. They should get significantly brighter after the car is running.
Again, I'm not trying to undermine the previous poster that said to disconnect the battery, it's just not something I would recommend. Perhaps he's had good luck with that method.
