When I took the alternator to autozone it was COLD. That's why the test came out good.
When I start it now, the Saab will run perfect with every electrical thing on it going as long as it's cold. Once the alt starts to warm up, I can smell something, not really a familiar smell but sort of a burning....something...and it's coming from the alternator.
Then suddenly the car tries to run off the battery. Does it EVERY time. If I start the car, turn everything on, and rev the rpms up a few thosand two or three times, it does the same thing; tries to run off the battery.
I'm going to pick up another alternator from my local Saab repair guy, and swap them out. I knew the alt was acting up months ago, sort of a chirping, rubbing noise from the alt pulley area so my guess is the bearing is crapping and heating up abnormally, causing something to die...a diode, the armature, hell I don't know.
$50 for a good used alt, and I trust this guy so why not.
Good luck to you all-
