I finally removed the head yesterday. I chose to use the wooden dowel method, they worked well. I used two dowels, on at the head bolt hole above cylinder number four and one dowell above number one.
I pulled the head with the exhaust manifold attached... did it myself, (bad idea), but managed to remve the head without damaging the chain guide. ( the dowels prevent the head from sliding down as you lift it from the block). I'm not a large person, that head was heavy and awkward to lift.
The head easily lifted off the gasket, no sticking whatsoever. There was a crack in the gasket between cylinder number one and a coolng passage. Caught it early, no erosion on either the head or block surfaces.
Bad news... broke an exhaust stud while preparing the head for the machine shop. Machine shop guy said it's not a big deal...
So far I have about 12 hours into this job. I must be slower than the average SAAB mech! Putting things together should go a bit faster being that I won't be dealing with corroded fasteners and such.
