Josh, there is a rubber coupling in the shift assembly near the rear end of the transmission. The clamp on the rearmost end of the rubber coupling may have come loose and slipped. That would sure be the best case scenario. You must align the assembly before re-tightening it.
The adjusting procedure for later cars like yours involves placing the transmission in third gear then putting a pin through the hole in the shift selector shaft that will pass between the raised bosses on the rear transaxle cover with one end in the raised pocket. (You'll see these features when you look at the rear cover). Loosen the clamp bolt, Put the shift lever firmly in third and re-tighten the clamp bolt. A little easier with an assistant and almost has to be done from below with the car on jackstands (or a lift). You can use a piece of 3/16" drill rod about 6" long for the pin.
You may also have a shift rod in the process of breaking at the silly weld near the shift ball. Let's hope that it's not a messed up synchro-mesh unit. Good luck and keep us posted.
