Mitch - - Good sleuthing. Not there to see it but most likely it's corroded on the post and inside the cable end. They used to make wire brushes and even taper reamers to clean these bright, but you can do a pretty good job scraping with a knife or with the flat side of a screwdriver blade, till bright. Then remove nut all the way on terminal clamp bolt, and push-tap the bolt out and soak it in water with baking soda, or just power wire brush it good all over, then oil it and run the nut on and off good, then reinstall it. Don't overtighten
If clamp won't tighten onto post, you could try removing the bolt again and filing away some of the lead away in the open gap.
Those replacement cable ends aren't much use. Corrosion happens quickly on the copper wires in under the metal strap, so you have to keep taking them apart, shortening cable up and reattaching.
Your problem could also be corrosion on the wires inside the lead, which you should be able to see. Or corrosion on the wires inside the insulation. Both cured best by new cable.
Auto parts stores sell a variety of new ready-made cables in lots of lengths, they look up for your car to know which one is best.
Could be the result of years of use, prior batteries leaking a little acid. Or could be a current battery leaking lots of acid. If the latter, you'll get more trouble later. There are sprays meant to keep cable ends from corroding, also felt washers.
Your poor contact could also be battery post breaking loose inside battery. They look rugged but need to be treated gently. If it's this, the answer is a new battery.
