Replace the Voltage Regulator Posted by Steve Schwedland [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: car keeps killing batteries., Steven W, Tue, 3 Jan 2006 16:31:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It seem like I've had this kind of problem with every Saab I've dealt with (6). When the brushes attached to the VR get worn down the alternator doesn't charge properly. This leads to all kinds of wierd problems. The voltage output from the alternator will seem OK when sitting in the driveway, but for some reason the battery isn't getting a good charge. This kills the battery in short order.
I spent the better part of a month one time trying to track down why my battery would not start the car after sitting for a few days. After I put in a new VR I never had the problem again. Since you can get a new VR for under $50 I always recommend that you replace it at the first sign of ANY battery/charging trouble. It's kind of tricky to get to with the alternator in the car, but doable. I use needle nose vise grips to break the screws lose, then you can use a screwdriver to get them out.
The other thing to do is to _really_ look at all the wiring. I had a ground cable that looked fine, but after close inspection it had deteriorated inside the plastic at the connector.
