What to do when your mechanic tells you...

Hello all,
About a month ago I brought my girlfriend's '89 900s to a well-known and highly respected Boston area mechanic for a variety of reasons (tie rods, cv joint etc). He told me that the clutch was slipping and will need to be replaced soon. I said I had not noticed that and would look out for it. So on the way home, I drove the car really hard and noticed no slipping. Now it's been about a month and I still haven't felt it slip at all (the clutch began to occasionally slip in the Champ so I know what it feels like). The car does, to my knowledge, have the original clutch at 164k miles, so it's not unbelievable that it would be going. But to me it feels strong.
Now I almost feel like I can't trust the guy anymore despite his excellent reputation (TSN recommended). Should I look at this as an honest error? He sees many Saabs daily. Also, he has a bunch of people working for him and he told me that one of his aids was the one that noticed it. Perhaps there was some miscommunication somewhere? Or do I not know what a slipping clutch feels like? Thanks for listening.
