Electrical short tracing question

I am trying to trace a short. With the ignition off, I started at the battery and did a fairly primitive test. I took the wires from the positive pole of the battery and would unbolt them from where they terminated on the car, while leaving them connected to the battery. I then just tapped them on the posts they were previously bolted to and watched for a spark.
The end that goes to the alternator didn't spark, but the end the goes to the right wheel well terminal block did.
I then disconnected the wires that were connected to the terminal block and did the same test with them. I found that I got a spark between the positve wire and the wire that goes to the ignition. When I tried to read the wiring diagram in Bentley's, it turns out that one of the ignition terminals (30) is always hot and that it delivers power to some electrial subsystems from there. But I can't understand the diagram well enough to tell what those sytems might be.
Can anyone tell me what electrical subsytems on the car draw power from the ignition switch? Also, can the ignition switch itself be the source of the short? Thirdly, is this actually a valid way to test for a short?
