Kind of sounds like a failure of the friction disk. A bad throw-out bearing will make noise or squeal when you step on the clutch. The noise will go away when the clutch pedal is up. The bearing only spins when it's pressing on the clutch cover springs. The smell of burning asbestos suggests friction disk problem. A pulsing clutch pedal is kind of weird but makes me think again of a really trashed throw-out bearing.
