It probably made sense when the nerd was making up the drawings and stress analysis of the situation but then reality kicks in and it doesn't work that good.
I have used short studs all over for many years now (where applicable) and have had no broken studs or cracked exhaust manifold.
The 4 long studs still keeps breaking even on 2000 and up cars.
Problem though with the mid 90 and up Saabs is that the long studs are used to hold either the SAI pipes or a heat sheilds in place so it is not as easy to replace them with short studs anymore.
