1. Don't take it to a mechanic. A total idiot dented up my firewall trying to do the same thing.
2. Remove the alternator belt; I assume you're past this by now. Swing the alternator up against the brake master cylinder.
3. Remove the upper two alternator bracket bolts- the ones that fasten it to the block.
4. With a ball-end allen wrench or hex socket, loosen the lower bolt a turn or so. You DO NOT have to remove it! There is a slot cut in the lower edge of the bracket.
5. Swing the alternator back away from the master cylinder toward the water pump, then rotate the alternator and bracket toward the intake manifold. Hey, look! Now you can pull the alternator pivot bolt out of there!
Cool, huh?
I highly suggest you replace your alternator mount bushings (two of those) and the alternator tension arm bracket bushings (two halves there). By 200K the rubber has failed allowing the alternator to twist out of alignment. The photo below, well, those are the remains of mine. Even better, it takes ten minutes to replace them (while you're obviously in the neighborhood) and the parts cost about twelve bucks.
