Karl,
The front brake calipers on your '86 has a groove that the caliper yoke rides in. The groove gets worn too wide with age. The clunk that you are hearing is the caliper moving against the yoke. It seats itself in against the yoke when driving forward and applying the brakes. When you drive in reverse and apply the brakes the caliper moves slightly and strikes the yoke, taking up this excess "slack". A fix from Saab was to weld a piece of shim stock on the yoke to take up this excess clearance. I have purchased rebuilt calipers with the groove exceding the maximum width. It appears that this is not repaired during rebuilding. I have mig welded and then using a grinder restored the width to original specs and thus eliminating the "clunk" that you are experiencing.
Good luck,
Jon
