Sticking Starter

I recently installed a used starter in my 1990 900 (non turbo). Now there is a screeching noise comming from the starter/starter area after the engine is started. I think that the gear is not dis-engaging from the fly wheel.
Are there any tests to determine the problem? I thought about disconnecting the "hot" wire to the starter while the engine is running to see if the noise goes away. Is it possible that the gear sits too far forward towards the flywheel? Should I slightly loosen the starter and try it? Do I need "shim" to the starter?
The used starter that I installed looks the same as the one I removed with the execption of the selonoid. The old one was a bosch, the used is made in Japan.
I am having Alt/charging problems as well,(I did not disconnect the battery before replacing the starter and grounded out the "hot" starter cable causing a few sparks) I had no charging issues before I started the starter swap. I have since had the alt tested and it's fine, plan to trouble shot that tomorrow with advice from previous postings (thanks all!). Could the starter noise be related to my charging problem or vise versa?
Sorry for the long post, Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.
