It's important to compare apples and apples here. The older, bigger, more flat throw out bearing was used long time ago (some pre 85 or more) with a different style slave cylinder. I don't think very many of them are in use anymore.
That bearing can't be used with the slave installed after about 85.
It's probably 10 years ago since I resealed one of those slave cylinders and installed the bigger release bearing, and that's only because my former boss had some seal kits and throw out bearings laying around. I think he still have a seal kit and bearing left of it.
Your buddy is talking about the new style slave cylinder and throwout bearing introduced in mid 85 that had the rubber bellow and spring added in the beginning of 90s.
That throwout bearing (8721995)is the same either it's used with rubber bellow or the older plastic ring.
With the proper tools and handling it is no big deal to install or uninstall the newer style rubber bellow but yes it takes a little bit more time compared to the plastic ring setup.
