While more frequent oil changes can help the sludge problem, I believe the main cause is severe oil temps in modern, high-output, highly-stressed engines. I notice Hondas usually don't have this problem, perhaps because most models come with engine oil coolers.
We have no qualms about running a modern engine at 90 mph for hours on end in 100-degree heat uphill with the air conditioner on. This would be impossible in years past because engine coolant temps would rise alarmingly or the car wasn't capable of that level of performance.
The cars that WERE capable used 10w-40 or 20w-50 oil or Mobil 1. Modern engines require oil that flows immediately so now we find 5w-30 or even 5w-20 as the oil du jour.
These light oils can work if a cooler is involved. Either that, or we must be mindful of what we're asking these light oils to do. Once we get oil temps up above 275f degrees or so, their chemistry is altered irrevocably. Of course, most of these lubrication problems can be cured by changing to synth.
