Nope, I'm in wintery Minnesota, land of the road salt and home of the rust. I'm well aware that a bolt I remove today can and most likely will be just as rusted back in place a year from now.
All he was trying to accomplish was an axle replacement and had a limited finite amount of time to do it in. Instead of losing some of that valuable time now removing something that wasn't necessary, I suggested sticking to the basics to get done what he wanted at this time.
So, IF he was able to get the caliper off, then what? Wouldn't moving it up and out of the way put just as much stress on the brake line as leaving it in place? IMO, I think there's much more risk of more stress as it is no longer attached to anything. At least by leaving it all together and part of the hub it will still be attached to the car by more than a single brake line.
