aalto, Yes the differential preload and backlash can be set up on a workbench but it requires some tools not typical in most garages. When I was building a transaxle from 2 or 3 or 4 busted ones I would often have to swap a good final drive into an adoptive case. The process has several steps that require careful measurement in .001" (or .01 mm) and sometimes a final contact test with transfer dye. That's why it's a PIA to do under the car.
