I know this has been talked about a number of times but i don't think this question has been definitively handled.
I am planning to swap inner drivers. Some (very good) information i have received suggests that the correct way to do the swap is to remove the inner drivers from the aluminum flanges. This leaves the flanges and shims in their original positions on the transmission. Only the actual inner drivers get swapped. This does require the renewal of the differential seals.
However, an alternative method (in my mind) would be to leave the shims where they are on the transmission and swap both the flanges and inner drivers as a unit. This would not make it necessary to change seals.
This later method may makes some sense (at least to me) given that the flanges can be bought as separate replacement units (from eeuroparts among other places). It seems to me that if the flanges, shims and transmission were to be regarded as an inseperable then it would never be possible to change the flanges (or buy then) as the calibration of the differential preload would be off and there would be no real way to determine what it is.
