they don't have to.
1. take an angle grinder with a cutting wheel on it and cut a slot down the center of the pad, perpindicular to it. cut down into the pad material about 60%. lots of non-saab pads are cut this way from the factory.
2. if you are not replacing the rotors at the same time, grind a small bevel on the top edge of the pad where it would mate with the outer edge of the rotor. do this if your rotors have a small lip at the outer edge from wear. skip this step if the rotors have no lip.
3. grind a 45 degree bevel on the leading edge of the pad at the front. grind down to 60% of the full depth of the pad.
4. go to your auto parts store and get some anti-squeal sticky sauce -- it comes in a spray can. the stuff i have used is blue, by permatex, but i'm sure there are other brands. you spray it on the backing plates, wait a few minutes and install the pads.
these instructions come from a saab mechanic (not me) that can't afford to have his customers come back complaining of squeals. he needs plenty of time to rebuild transmissions. just kidding about the transmissions.
