I have wrestled with this for a long time....the factory setup is pretty good actually...but age and tires are factors...springs stiffen, shocks definitely stiffen but the biggest issue in my area is the roads are worse than in Botswana. Metro New York has the worst roads I have ever driven on. Potholes/concrete ridged with filled in holes that make ever bigger bumps and ridges. So you either have good handling....and noise/ruined rims....or mushy soft walled H rated BFGs for a soggy but more compliant ride with not so great cornering. And they wonder why 4X4s are so popular!!!!
