Need to change 5-spd fluid if shifting smoothly?

I have been going through many of the threads regarding changing the fluid in the 5-spd tranny. I have 143K miles on the car (I assume it's the original tranny), and have no clue if the fluid was ever changed. I have put 20K miles on the car since buying it 2 years ago.
Shifting is extremely smooth, even in the cold temps here in CT. Thankfully, there is nothing to complain about concerning the tranny. Do I need to replace the fluid if everything is functioning correctly? I'm nervous that I am going to ruin something that is working okay (Murphy's Law--"if it ain't broke, don't fix it").
Also, I have read that it is not wise to go from synthetic (such as Redline MTL) to fossil (such as Honda MTF), but the reverse is okay. If I have no clue as to what is in there now, is it okay to use Honda MTF?
