That's like saying you don't need to change the engine oil because it starts just fine. As the transmission runs, it generates metal chips. Not a lot, but if you don't change the oil, they're always there, going round and round, creating more metal chips because they just love company. And the lubricating capability (lubricity) of oil doesn't get better with time; it only gets worse.
If you wait until the transmission is hard to shift to change the oil, it has already been damaged, and changing the oil won't fix anything. Yes, Murphy's law is there, but ignorance is bliss - bliss for the guy selling you a new tranny.
I like synthetic oil in gearboxes - they shift nicely in the cold. Since one doesn't change the transmission fluid often, it's not like you'll go broke ponying up for synthetic. I just use a good quality synthetic like Castrol, but Redline is excellent.
Given the fact the the 5 speed can be a little fragile, an oil change is much, much cheaper than repair work. Ever priced a new pinion gear?
