Diagnosis is pretty straightforward, but it does involve climbing under the car. With a piece of chalk (although I use either fingernail polish for a lasting mark), draw a line across the edge of the dual pulleys. After a squealing start-up, check the mark again (after shutting the car down). If the line isn't lined up, the harmonic balancer needs replacement.
Yes, on the 900 replacing the pulley is a real bear. It is regularly done with the engine in place, but it helps to have a lift and a ground-down socket. With a 900, unless I had a warm garage, I would farm it out. It won't be cheap, but most of the cost will be the pulley. Any shop that says they need to pull the engine is one you should avoid.
The only part you need is the pulley. Everything else can be reused. However, since the belts have to come off, if the belts need replacement, or will need replacement in the next 10K miles, replace them now. And frankly, while the pulley is off, you might as well have the main seal replaced. The extra labor is about 5 minutes, and the part is only about 6 bucks. If you really want to get some stuff done, there is an O-ring behind the oil pump that can leak. To replace it, the pulley has to come off, then the oil pump (which surrounds the crankshaft). With the pulley off, it's just the labor to undo the 12 or so bolts on the oil pump. Maybe 45 minutes labor and a $5 O-ring. If you aren't leaking any oil from that area, you can probably pass on the O-ring, but I'd do the main seal.
