The brake fluid (hopefully!) stays within your slave cylinder and clutch line. The primary chain sits beneath that cover, and it is lubricated with transmission fluid. If you remove that cover, you should see an X-shaped plastic "spinner" that helps to distribute the fluid that is splashed up there by the lower sprocket. Since the primary chain cover is right in the incoming air flow, and that air is rarely clean, you can identify leakage of the round cover rubber seal by drool coming down from the cover, usually accompanied by dirt-stuck-to-leaked-oil in the recess just below the small cover.
