I have the same motor in my '92 S; with the super cheap stuff you'll eventually burn out yor valves, but she can handle it once in a while. Higher grades of gas typically have better detergents and more of them. At least in the summer, I noticed lower performance, easier fouling, and shakier running/idle on the regular. Your motor has a fairly intelligent knock sensor, so things are typically in control, but I noticed that stepping down on the gas you can hear the engine knock ever so briefly and then feel the timing back off.
I tried a tank of what turned out to be the worst gasoline ever on Labor Day weekend, just as everyone's prices had cleared three bucks. I found a station that was still $2.90s and took it. That entire tank, the engine was extremely hesitant to rev up, had almost no power, and I could feel the knock sensor kicking in and retarding the timing into oblivion.
Even with current prices, elevated or not, I quit using regular (except that one tank) a year and a half ago. Higher octane fuel won't burn as quickly. I tend to be really picky about my mileage, but the difference of the higher octane fuel hardly factors in. Better additives resulting in a cleaner combustion chamber may, however.
If anyone out there lives in the Capital District of NY and wants to know which station that was, I'll respond to e-mails. I can just hear the Comic Book Guy now. "Worst... Gasoline... Everr!" I'm estimating it around 84 octane.
I ran as much fuel out of the tank as I could (17.4 gallons in an 18 gallon tank), refueled with a full tank of super-duper, and the problem instantly went away. Not a nice thing to do to my motor that I want (and expect) at least another 200k out of before a rebuild.
